dcpromo on 2003 R2 Server in Mixed Mode asking for Domain Prep Tool?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi,

I just upgraded one of my company's domains from NT4 to Windows 2003
Active Directory. We're currently running in Mixed Mode, so our NT
BDC's in our field offices could still serve login requests. Well, I
built a new 2003 Server that I was going to offload all the "first
domain controller in forest tasks" to, so we could decomission the
upgraded box. I get it built and run "dcpromo", which takes me
through the Active Directory Install Wizard.

It find the domain no problem and accepts my credentials. It then
examines the current forrest, and comes back with an operation failed
error:

"The operation failed because:

The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the
forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the
adprep command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain.
For more information about using the Adprep, see Active Directory
Help.

'The Version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest in
not compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer.'
"

This doesn't make much sense to me since the current DC is a Windows
2003 R2 Server box. I even used the same CD's in the builds... Is
there some particular "dcpromo" switch I have to used when promoting
in a mixed mode domain? Is it just because mixed mode is compatible
with Windows 2000 AD that it is missing the relevant information and
the prep tool needs to be run. This seemed abnormal, so I wanted to
check here first.

Paul
