Re: Remove NT4 PDC

Many thanks for all of the replies. We only have one domain here and I
thought we still had an NT PDC but after a quick check it turns out that we
don't and that both the NT domain controllers are BDC's - I presume the old
PDC was demoted when I installed active directory. At the moment then I
have 2 2003 DC's and 2 NT DC's (that are flagged as backups).
I don't think this improves my situation much though as I still need to move
to 2003 native mode before we can put Exchange 2003 in. I can just
decommission one of the NT DC's because of its age but the other one running
the app is the problem.

Looking at your replies it looks like my best option would be to do an
in-place upgrade of the NT box to 2000 which would then make it a 2000 DC?
When this is done can I then run DCPROMO to demote it to just a member server?
Once the demotion has been done (and the other NT DC has been swtiched off)
can I then move to 2003 native?

Sorry if I am repeating questions and many thanks for the help.

We are currently in the process of moving to 2003 Active Directory. I
have
2003 installed and the Active Directory is setup and running but I can't
go
to 2003 native mode yet because I still have an NT4 PDC

No, you do not have this situation. There cannot be an NT PDC within an
Active Directoy domain, so you either don't have this or you have at least
one domain that is not AD (maybe you have two domains at this point.)

and BDC running. The
problemt is with the PDC - normally I would have just re-built it and used
it
for something else but unfortunately it is running a critical app (not my
decision to put the app on this machine) and so re building it is out of
the
question.

The ONLY way to keep an NT domain is to UPGRADE SPECIFICALLY the
PDC to Windows Server running AD.

Any other method creates a new domain and requires migration of the current
users, resources, and especially the user profiles.

My question is can I just do an implace upgrade of the PDC box to
server 2000 ( I know the app works under server 2000) and then demote it
to
just being a member server?

YES. That is generally the best way. Upgrade to Win2000+ DC and then
add more DCs before demoting the old PDC.

If this can be done will it cause any issues
with use authentication etc.? And can I then move to 2003 native?

Once you upgrade ALL DCs to Win2003 (not 2000 or NT) you can move
to Win2003 Server Native mode.

With just 2000/2003 you can use Win2000 Native mode.

Many thanks

Sure.
