Re: Remove NT4 PDC

We are currently in the process of moving to 2003 Active Directory. I
have
2003 installed and the Active Directory is setup and running but I can't
go
to 2003 native mode yet because I still have an NT4 PDC and BDC running.

There is no way that I know of to have a Win 2k3 DC and a NT 4.0 DC in the
same domain. I'm assuming this is a trust between the NT 4.0 domain and the
AD domain which will not be affected by the switch to native mode.

My question is can I just do an implace upgrade of the PDC box to
server 2000 ( I know the app works under server 2000) and then demote it
to
just being a member server?

You can do an inplace upgrade that will put this server in a domain of it's
own. When you demote it you will loose that domain and all user info because
this server will be the only DC in the domain. You would then need to add it
to the Win 2k3 domain or leave it as a standalone that you manage the users
manually.

If this can be done will it cause any issues
with use authentication etc.? And can I then move to 2003 native?

If your end result is to switch to Win 2k3 native mode, you should be able
to do that now.

If your end result is to get the app on the existing PDC into the AD domain
that's different.

The
problemt is with the PDC - normally I would have just re-built it and used
it
for something else but unfortunately it is running a critical app (not my
decision to put the app on this machine) and so re building it is out of
the
question. My question is can I just do an implace upgrade of the PDC box

Many thanks
