Re: change standalone server to active directory

Hello eck...@xxxxxxxxxx,

To make it a DC just run dcpromo from the command line, but before think
about the workstations. Should them be member of the domain or not? You have
to think about the user accounts. If you create a domain you should configure
domain user accounts. The local accounts used in the moment can not login
to the domain even if the workstation is domain member.

You have to think about DNS configuration for your environment and maybe
use DHCP or fixed IP's. How are the workstations connected now?

I have a standalone Server 2003 standard edition server on my network
and it's the only server. I have my shared folders set up with
workgroup security. I have Xp desktops that connect to it. Can I make
this server a domain controller and useactivedirectoryfor my
security? Will I have to reset my security settings and do I use
DCpromo to do this or can I run the manage server wizard and add it
that way?

Thanks

I currently have 12 pc's all XP boxes. I created user accounts on the
server with the same logon account they use to log on to their local
machines. I then created shares on the Server for the users. This
works ok, I just thought it may be more secure and easier to manage if
I went to Active directory. I also have a cable modem for my Internet/
mail connection. Our web site and email is on an outsourced server.I
have my internal network on switches with private ip's and a public ip
for my router. I was also considering setting up my server with
sharepoint service. Do you see any problems with this setup?

Thanks

Steve
