Re: Can switch print servers w/o touching workstations?

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Are your existing desktop printers simply "print connections" to the print
server? If so you can use the built in vbs scripts in the c:\windows\sytem32
folder - prnmngr.vbs, prndrvr.vbs, prncnfg.vbs there are a couple others
too. One of these should do the trick. I had to convert 4000+ print queues
over from a Novell print server to 2 MS Print servers and these worked for
me, with a little customization due to the Novel part of it, but if your
going from MS to MS, these should handle it straight out of the box.

Sounds like you want to upgrade from NT 4?? If so, look at Server 2003
R2....it has some new Print Management features, that take advantage of
Group
Policy. I haven't had a chance to look to deep into it yet, but from what
I
have heard, you can roll out printers either to specific computers, or to
specific users.

See this -

The nice part is the central management and Group Policy. That might help
in your redeployment, as you shouldn't have to go to each machine to point
them to your new print server.

To have redundant print servers...not sure on that one...you could
cluster,
but that is probably an overkill...if it was just for printing.

Bump. Any more ideas?

Is there a way to move a network printer to a different print server
without
touching the workstations that use the printer? I'm hoping there's a
cool way
to do this in AD since it seemed impossible with NT4. We might have to
do
this en masse soon because our current print server might need its C:
partition blown out so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Similarly, is
there a way to set up some sort of redunant print server that still
keeps
users' printers up and running if the main print server goes down?
