Hi all,

I am reinstalling my Windows 2003 Server (Domain Controller) and have
questions regarding the best way of handling user accounts.

1) I want to setup roaming profiles, but i'd prefer the profiles NOT to
get cached on the local computer. Some profiles are 2/300 mb in size, thus
cause log ons and log offs to take too long. Is there a simple way to
ensure this is the case or do I need to dig around in GP to turn off
folder redirection (which I felt didnt work 100%).

You should remove folders such as Local Settings, Temp, and Temporary
Internet Files from (most) profiles. There is seldom any reason to copy
these
to/from the server and the Temporary Internet Files can easily be on the
order
of a Gigabyte.

2) I previously experianced users getting conflicting start menus. I.e.
user A would install a product that would insert or overwrite items into
user B's start menu. I do not want this to happen, what can I do to ensure
it is avoided.

That would only happen if you are pointing roaming profiles to LITERALLY
the SAME directory for different users - -never do that.

Use something like \\ServerName\ShareName\%username% to keep them
all separate.

If you must share a profile then it should almost always be a Mandatory
Profile which has the effect of making it read-only on the Server.

3) My old user profiles will need to be migrated over. Copying across the
My Documents data is easy enough, however what else would need to be
copied?

Depends on what you want. Most people want their NTUser.dat settings and
pretty much everything else (except the temp/local stuff.)

Each user will be starting on a fresh system with no applications
installed, thus I only want to retain work and email.

Why are you doing all this? Usually people do this due to some large
misunderstanding of the OS and its features when easier ways exist to
straighten things out....
