I followed the instructions and it hasn't made a difference. However,
if I ping mailserver.mydomain.com, I get the IP address of the mail
server. If I ping mydomain.com, I get the PDC machine. Yet
everything I can find in AD says the mail server is the master.
Which master? There are five single master roles in a (single domain)
forest. The word "master" is also used for the DNS that secondary uses
for zone transfers.
All
DNS records for the domain exist on both controllers so I don't get
why it can't find... here's the event logs:
All DCs register the base name of the domain (e.g., domain.com) so you
will get one of these (semi-) randomly due to round robin when you ping
that domain name.
