I was wondering if there was a way in AD to have a redunant print server in
case the main server fails or is shut down. Does such a feature exist or
have
print servers always been doomed with a single point of failure?
Not specifically in "AD" but you can Server Cluster Print Servers.
(I have never personally done this one, but it is listed as one of the
server clusterable services. HTTP printing could be NLB [load
balanced] too.)
Re: RestrictAnonymous=2 prevents getting queue status from Servers ... It's interesting to note that if I stop the Server service on the client... i wonder if computers in a domain are also affected. ... the print servers connect back to the clients ... (microsoft.public.security)

Re: Extremely slow printing to remote printers ... you don't really even know if the problem is on the server or the XP boxes.... Something else you could try is on the XP hosts, go to Printers and Faxes -> File -> Server Properties and up the logging for the spooler. ... I use a couple of the Dymo USB label printers, and I hook them up to the HP Jetdirect USB print servers - I think the model number is 175X, which if not is close enough for you to figure it out. ...
