So, just to be clear, what you recommend I do in order to make sure each
PC
is "fully" integrated into our domain and therefore able to participate in
secure dynamic DNS updates via DHCP is to go into

System->Computer Name->Change->More->

and add [company].local into the "Primary DNS suffix of this computer"

Yes, add the actual DNS suffix there.

dialog box with the "Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership
changes" box checked.

Yes, usually I like that too.

Am I right?

Yes.

My collegue was actually changing the
domain from [company] to [company].local. I'm not sure if that is a good
or
bad way of doing it but I just want to get this right.

Don't -- the name there should be the NetBIOS name -- or at least
that one works just fine.

The good news is that
so far WINS is being used as a backup and everybody is able to
authenticate
fine so we can afford to take our time with this. Your help is much
appreciated.

You really need to fix the DNS in general now if you have trouble with it.
This DNS Primary Suffix isn't as big a deal unless registration is important
to you.

BTW, I noticed on DNS this morning that some new entries were added by
machines that we haven't touched, but the entries are nowhere near the
amount
of new DHCP leases we have. Weird.

DHCP server might be able to add them for you. Make sure you give the DHCP
server the correct DNS name if you want THIS to work.
