We are attempting to remotely administer an XP workstation over a PPTP
VPN.
When the machine is connected to the VPN, we are not able to ping it or
update Group Policy on it. The remote machine can ping all server IP's.
Then likely it is running the XP firewall (or a similar add-on) and inbound
Ping (ICMP) is blocked.
Were ICMP blocked on an intermediate firewall then it could not ping and
receive the reply. That it can ping proves that routing works.
Adjust the firewall to allow those things you wish to support, e.g., inbound
ICMP Echo requests, RDP, etc.
We
have a SBS 2003 R2 for a DC and the VPN is on a 2003 Enterprise Server
(member server) in the same domain. We also could not get it to work when
we
temporarily set up RRAS on the SBS server and connected the XP machine via
PPTP to this DC.
You know you have ROUTING working since the remote machine can ping
your Servers.
It is almost certainly the XP firewall that is not opened to the traffic you
need.
