So Microsoft create this one usefull technology for deploying software from
server to clients. Its not genious becuase its been used for years on other
server platforms but still, its a welcome addition. Finally something that
actually makes things easier.
You would then assume that Microsoft would release their own software in
their msi installer format? But heck no, most stuff is released as .exe. Even
Internet Explorer 7 that is certain to be installed by sysadmins on clients
around the world comes as a .exe.
They even release software for creating a custom installation for IE7
(Internet Explorer Administration Kit). But of course this will generate a
useless .exe file as well. How simple it would be to add support for
generating an .msi file!
It make me wonder if Microsoft takes pride in rendering their own technology
useless?
I am aware it is possible to create custom msi files with 3d party software
but I have not had any luck with them. In all cases you of custom msi files
you loose alot of the functionality of an actual msi install package from the
developers.
Sometimes nice people create custom .msi packages of software and release
them for download. I was able to deploy Firefox 2.0 this way. I have been
searching for an msi package for IE7 without luck for quite some time. If
anyone know where one can be downloaded I would be very greatful for the
information!
