I have a win 2003 file server that has two drives . The D: drive contains
shares that are controlled by entries in the security list.
this server was working great until I installed Surf Control to limit
Internet access. Now all of a sudden we can not access the shared drive.
When I look at the security list I see numbers instead of the actual group
names ex. instead of teachers it shows 2-3 456098.
No strange at all. You installed some sort of firewall/proxy software
to restrict access. It did.
Chances are it is also closing ports for things like authentication traffic
(maybe file sharing too) so that User Name (Security Principals) for
Access Control list entries cannot be resolve and display as names so
they are showing as the SID representation.
Otherwise you may have managed to take the server out of the domain
but I doubt that happened from what you said.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Don't use an INTERNAL file server as a firewall/proxy to the Internet.
Separate the jobs.
(Or if you must, read up on Surf Control [the manual] and figure out
how to keep it from doing this -- OR find a decent piece of software
to do this, e.g., the FREE PRIVOXY or the excellent but costly ISA.)
