Re: Moving 'First' DC in Forest

Thanks for your help anyway. There is not "the article" on your link. There
are many articles and many of them have nothing to do with what I asked. I
already have a E23K server so I don't need to upgrade from E2K Exchange,
etc.

no, I have not misunderstood you...

I think one of us missunderstands the state of my AD. The AD currently
fully supports the Exchange 2003 Server. I'm not upgrading from a W2K AD
to a Win2k3 AD. All I want to do is add a Win2k3 DC into the mix and then
make it the primary.

yes, you have...

first you had e2k and now you have e2k3... although you may have not
upgraded the server and OS you did introduce a e2k3 server and for that to
be able to had to update the schema

the same also applies to AD....if you have w2k AD and you want to
introduce a w2k3 dc you need to update your AD with new schema
extensions...as long as you have a w2k the "upgrade" is not fully
finished...why? because only when being at DFL/FFL W2K3 you are using 100%
w2k3 and w2k3 AD functionalities. With a W2K DC you need to remain at DFL
Windows 2000 Native and FFL Windows 2000 and in that scenarios you will
not have all the available functionalities to use...

as I said earlier. read the article I mailed you as that contains ALL the
information you need to know

When I do the install of the W3k3 OS, it will ask me if I want to make
this a DC and then if I want to join a existing domain, When I respond
yes to both, won't that do these steps?
* use the W2K3 SP1 CD!
* update schema (only needed to introduce w2k3 DC, not needed for w2k3
member servers)
* introduce w2k3 DCs

What do I use to do this step?
* move stuff over from w2k DCs to w2k3 DC

And this one?
* demote W2K DC ( I want to keep it as a second DC right now)

Just like you upgraded your Exchange Org from 2000 to 2003 you want to
do the same for AD. By introducing a w2k3 DC you need to update your
AD forest....

Basically the steps are:
* use the W2K3 SP1 CD!
* update schema (only needed to introduce w2k3 DCs, not needed for
w2k3 member servers)
* introduce w2k3 DCs
* move stuff over from w2k DCs to w2k3 DCs

I set up an AD some time ago on a Windows 2000 Server. When I upgraded
the Exchange Server to 2000 (then 2003) I ran the utilities to add the
needed fields to the AD but the DC remained a Win2K server. (Exchange
2003 is not on the DC). I'm moving everyting to rack based computers
and want to set up a new DC as the 'first' in the Forest so that I
could eliminate the Win2K DC or keep it as a secondary DC.

Do I just set up the new machine as a DC in the existing AD domain
and then promote it? I found this article
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/024dbaab-d551-44da-8412-9fd4e6d5c9111033.mspx?mfr=true

If I set it up as a DC in the exisitng DC do I just transfer the RID,
PDC, infrastructure master role, domain naming master role, and
schema master roles to the new machine as shown in this article?
