Julie <julie-anne87@xxxxxxxxxxx> stated, which I commented on below:
Hi,
I've been playing around with win2k3 and winxp. I have setup win2k3
as an AD domain with a couple of users. I have also setup a group
policy to redirect its desktop and my documents folders to a share on
win2k3, \\server\userfiles.
My problem is that when I logon to the client (winxp), the folders
are NOT redirected and are in their usual place (C:\Documents and
Settings). When I logon to the server (win2k3), the folders ARE
redirected to the share.
Some notes:
- The client is a fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP2. The server is
Windows Server 2003 SP1 with Group Policy Management Console.
- The client can read/write to the share on the server
(\\server\userfiles).
- I have just created a couple of users on the server, with only their
passwords changed, no other alterations.
- Keep in mind I'm new to this.
- I have not altered anything in the GPMC except for editing the GPO,
Default Domain Policy (I changed redirecting folders).
- I have added the client machine to the Active Directory Users and
Computers MMC.
My question, as above, is how to get the folders to redirect when a
user logs onto the winxp client. There's something I'm missing that I
cannot work out.
Can anyone help me?
Thank you very much in advance,
Julie.
First, I would suggest to use:
\\sever\userfiles\%username%
This will put them in their own home folder, if the userfiles share is their
home folder.First
Second, since you are new to this, I would suggest to not use the Default
Domain Policy (as myweb also suggested). Create an OU called Company Users,
or whatever you like to call it, then create a separate GPO with your
redirection settings and others, if you like. Then link it to the GPO.
WIth the suggestions above, there really is no reason for it to not work. I
like the OU method with it's own GPO since it helps to organize the mess a
little better. As for the GPO not applying, a number of reasons can cause
that, and they are all AD & DNS configuration or misonfiguration based. Some
of the reasons are:
1. AD is a single label name. This will cause numerous issues.
2. If you have the ISP's DNS in any machine (workstations, servers or DC),
it will definitely cause it, after all it will be asking YOUR ISP, "where is
my domain controller?" Only use the internal DNS. Do not mix ISP and
internal DNS addresses. Using the wrong DNS will cause *numerous* issues
too.
3. If the DC is multihomed (multiple NICs). This will cause many issues as
well.
Some things to help troubleshoot it:
1. In the GPMC, run a Results report for the user account. See if the policy
is applying, and if not, why? (possible access denied?)
2. On the client in a CMD window, run gpresult. Do you see the policy being
applied or not?
To better help, also post:
1. An unedited ipconfig /all from the DC and from one of your clients.
2. Any event log errors on the DC and clients.
Thanks and Happy Holidays!!
