Re: Upgrade NT DC to Active Directory

Danny,
Although it may seem that I have ignored your post, I have actually
been working on this from several directions. Yes, the AD is up and
running. There is another (new) 2003 server that I was able join to
that domain. DNS is running and is visible from the upgraded machine. I
think the base problem is that ADIW has maintained the knowledge of two
things: 1) it was defined by a DC with domain of ABCDEF and 2) it was
in the process of canceling the upgrade.

At this point, I think it is futile to try and force the ADIW to
connect to the new AD, since it wants to cancel the upgrade and remove
the computer as a DC from the domain ABCDEF, that it cannot find. I
have looked, searched and "goggled" for how to get out of this
situation, but did not find any answers. My question now is: How can I
make ADIW forget that the DC upgrade was canceled? If I can do that
then I will upgrade the DC to AD and then demote the AD after I am
done.
Thanks again,
Ed.

Can you verify that the DC has it's srv records registered on the DNS
server?

If I press Next, the configuration fails because: The specified domain

domain you are trying to join it to.

I originally asked this in the Windows2003 general group. I think I may
have posted to the wrong group. I hope someone here can shed some light
on this.

I have attempted to upgrade a Win NT Server to Win2K3R2. The NT machine
was a DC (for example, named ABCDEF), but I want the machine to be part
of a different 2003 domain. The logical approach (at least I thought)
was to stop the installation of AD after the update - i.e., cancel the
AD installation wizard. I now know that was a mistake. Unfortunately,
now when I run ADIW, it goes through the prompts and ends up telling me
that it cannot connect to the ABCDEF AD in order to cancel the
installation of AD. Specifically, the message (after the new admin
password prompt) is:
You have chosen to cancel the upgrade of this domain controller, which
will make this computer a member server of domain ABCDEF.|
If I press Next, the configuration fails because: The specified domain
either does not exist or could not be contacted.
OK - Is there a way that I can cause the ADIW to give up on my attempt
to cancel the configuration? If I can do that, I think that I could
install AD on this machine and then change to a different domain.
Thanks,
Ed.

Danny,
Thanks for the response. One of the earlier messages that was presented
was in regard to the DNS. In response to that I did define the DNS
reference of the target machine to point to the machine with the AD.
That is the state I am in at the moment. I verified that I could do an
NSLOOKUP pointing to the AD machine.
Ed.
