Thanks.
I installed Office 2003 locally via a CD. So I did not use a MST at any
time during the install. Also, the machine has all the latest patches and
service packs for Office 2003 in addition to all the patches for Windows.
To achieve what the folder redirection, I use the following.
User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Folder Redirection -> My Documents
Change the location to C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Desktop
Restricting Access to C Drive
User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components ->
Windows Explorer -> Prevent Access to Drives in My Computer (restrict C)
When I disable "restricting access to C Drive," a user with 2003 has no
problems.
This only happens in Office 2003. Not Office 2000. In other words, a user
can open/save files to the Desktop no problem in Office 2000. However, with
Office 2003, a message appears about restricted access. If a user clicks
"OK" a couple times, this message disappears. But the 2003 user cannot save
to the Desktop.
Any other thoughts?

Okay, I understand that a user needs full access to his/her profile. My.
guess is that the Block Access to C Drive is interfering with the user having
the correct permissions to the C. This ONLY effects Office 2003 though, as I
can download files to the Desktop from IE7. In other words, users with the
folder redirection and blocked access to C drive can download pictures to the
Desktop from e-mail, or a program from a website. I need our patrons to be
able to do this so they have a temp workplace to store their files. All
files are erased after they log off with Deep Freeze. So my question still
remains, I need a way to redirect a user's My Documents to the Desktop, to
deny access to C AND give the user the necessary rights to view/save files to
the Desktop. How can I accomplish this?

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, going to each machine to do this
manually just won't work. Too many workstations to even consider trying
this. Is there a way to redirect users My Docs to the desktop, block access
to C and give the users necessary rights to view the Desktop without going to
each machine to do this manually?

you can take ownership of the folders/files and replace with the correct
permisions, this is done manually not by using GPO.

The profile is a local profile on the computer itself. If this is truly a
permissions issue, how do I configure a GP to take ownership of a local
folder?

I am a Network Admin at a public library. I use a group policy to
redirect
our patron users My Documents folder to the desktop using the following
path,
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Desktop. All use the same domain
user
account to login to the public workstations. Now, I have started to
upgrade
all the public workstations to Office 2003. When a patron goes to open a
file from within any Office 2003 program, he/she receives an error
message
that he/she does not have the necessary rights to view the folder. If
the
user clicks "OK" he/she can browse to a flash drive, floppy or the
desktop
with no problem. The reason the user receives this warning message is
that I
also use a group policy to restrict access to the C drive. If I disable
this
policy, the patron users do not receive a warning message about the
rights.
Is there a way to prevent this message from displaying while still using
the
combination of GP's I currently employ? We have a Windows 2003 domain.
