Re: need help setting up local and remote server access

Thomas B,

You have asked a very open ended question. It is going to be difficult to
give you an answer.

But, let's try.

First and foremost you need to decide if you want the standard version of
Windows Server 2003 (either 32-bit or 64-bit and probably looking at R2) or
if you want to go with Small Business Server 2003 R2 (again, 32-bit or
64-bit). Does Quickbooks work on 64-bit NOS? That would be one question
that I would want answered.....

If you want remote access then you have a couple of options: RDP or VPN (or
others with SBS2003....RWW I think is what it is called). If you want RDP
then note that you can not run Terminal Services on a SBS2003 box. You
would have to have a second Server. For that matter, it is not suggested or
recommended that you install Terminal Services on a Domain Controller
(although I will admit that I have done it before....shhh! do not tell
anyone!).

If you want VPN then you might want to look at either some Firewall that
could be the endpoint (such as a SonicWall or a Linksys or D-Link....the
DFL-200 and DFL-700 from D-Link are supposed to be really good! I would not
know as I generally stay away from D-Link...). Or, you could use the basic
Windows VPN.

Are you going to run Exchange Server 2003?

If you are going to install QuickBooks on the Terminal Server (please note
that Intuit will tell you that this is not possible with most versions)
please take a spin over to the Terminal Services news groups and ask Vera
Noest how to do this. She has a web page that gives you all of the details
to get it working. And, I know that it works because I have done it in a
couple of environments (a long time ago...).

Is this a start for you? And, is this really a question or do you have a
school project?

I need to set up local and remote server access.

I have Windows server 2003 active directory domain created and will have 8
local network windows xp pro machines accessing a Quickbooks data file and
will have 6 or 7 remote computers needing to do the same.

What are my options ?

Thanks,
Thomas B.
