Re: Adding AD role to a windows 2003 std. R2 member server

Spot on both counts, Cary.

Schema 31 is safe for SBS2003 implemented by the standard means uning R2
CD#2.

T,

There are a couple of things going on here....

1) you have an SBS2003 environment. That tell me all I need to know. The
SBS2003 machine *M*U*S*T* hold all five of the FSMO Roles. Period!

2) al the other poster suggested, you would have to update the Schema
(from 30 to 31.....or, from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2003
R2). I assume that you can do this in an SBS2003 environment but to be
safe I might post this in the SBS new groups.

Also, since you have an SBS2003 environment check out
http://www.smallserverbiz.net. The wonderful and lovely "M&M" girls have
done a super job....

Oh, and just in case this is all very possible (as I think) you need to
make sure that you are using the second CD (aka CD2) to modify the
schema.....

Hi,

I have a GC/DC running on windows 2003 SBS. I have a windows 2003 std R2
as
a member of the local domain. I want to add a AD role to the R2 but i am
getting the following errors during installation.

"The operation failed because:
The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the
forest
is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep.exe
command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain. Fore more
information about using Adprep.exe see Active Directory Help."
"The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not
compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer."

What am I missing? The domain functional level is at "windows server
2003".

Regards,
T.
