Re: Modifying account names

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

There are no error messages. I just change the case from upper case to lower
case, either click on apply or ok. I open the user account back up, and the
case identity has gone back to upper case. If the situation is reversed, and
I go from lower case to upper case, the same thing happens.
I can add letters or characters to the logon name, but I can't change the
case identity. Normally I would not care but it is a bit of an annoyance
since no one really knows how the case identity of their logon name attribute
(UPN) in AD and it's going to generate a lot of calls to our help desk.

I have absolutely no issue changing the case on any of the attributes of
the objects in my AD....

What errors do you see when you try to do it? Have you tried any command
line tools or adsiedit to do it?

The problem with Remedy is a Remedy issue. I know that, it's the way Remedy
works. (I think it's stupid, but that's the way it is)
However, the fact that I cannot change the case identity of the letters in
my log on name does seem to be an issue with Active Directory. I know AD
does not care about case identity in log on names. However, I've tried to
change the case identity in my log on name on a DC I have installed in a
VMWare environment. This is a forest completely separate from my production
environment and yet it too will not let me change the case identity of any
letter in my log on name.

I can tell you that neither of the issues are from AD. AD doesn't care
about case.

We are getting ready to implement Remedy in our environment. One thing I
really do not like, is that you have to log in using your AD account name,
but the name is case sensitive. You have to type it in exactly as it is in
AD. Our account names are a three letter division code, and then first
initial last name. A lot of the names have the division code in upper case,
then the user name in lower case, but there are a lot of variations to this.
I have tried to modify the account names so they are all lower case.
As soon as I make the change and close ADUC, the account name reverts back
to the same thing it was before the changes were made. I can add letters, or
take letters away from the account name, but I cannot change the case
identity of the letters in the name.
Does anyone know why?
