thanks for your reply. i tried opening the link

be found.
i tried using ADMT. i setup a trust between the 2 domians, but when i try &
run tool to test migtating users i get an error after is select the source &
target domains that the source domain cant be found.
on the new domian controller(fssamhire.redcow2.localdomain) i can browse to
old domain controller(fileserver.redcow) and access network shares. but from
the old domain controller(fileserver.redcow) i can see the
redcow2.localdomain domain in network places. i have tried adding redcow2 to
the lmhosts file.

By default auto registration in dns quits working as of W2000 sp4, because
of this you need to make changes as defined above. I would recommend you
consider migrating your single label forest into a standard dns system.
Using ADMT and creating a new forest with the new hardware you have to
migrate. You are just going to always have some issues until you get away
from this name space issue.

You will need to bring this new forest up and establish an external forest
trust with the old forest. Once established you would want to run ADMT to
mmigrate the users, groups, machines, etc...

i have a problem on a windows 2000 server, when it was set a few years
ago,
the domain name was set as redcow but it wasnt given a FQDN and i think

was when the DNS server on the server wont work. this wasnt a problem
until
we introdued XP pc's to the network, we where using win98 until then and i
am
guessing they worked ok because they where using wins.
i now want to migrate the domain to a new server 2003. but cant because i
am
getting an error when i try to replicate the AD to the new server which i
have setup as a member of the domain.
does anyone know how i can get around this DNS problem.
i have tried adding entries to the lmhost file on both servers but still
getting the error.
