can't map a drive to DC in another domain

I've seen this problem with a remote domain that's linked with a trust and
with one that has no trust relationship. I can map a drive from windows
explorer or the command line to any other server here except the domain
controllers in the remote domain. The network connectivity is good - either
on the same subnet or connected by a hardware VPN. I use the ID of a domain
admin to either an administrative share (C$) or c:\test, or a domain user to
c:\test, which is shared everyone:full control. All fail with "System error
5 has occurred. Access is denied."
Any suggestions?
Bob
