i did see that area to push msi packages, what i was more intrested in
was pushing windows updates. Does this mean i must download all windows
updates as msi and push them with ad through the software section of
the gpo mmc?
does this only push once or keep trying to push every time the computer
or user loggs on depending on with software key i put it under?

I have a windows 2000 server domain (all windows 2000 servers) i have a
few 2003 servers none have been pormoted yet. I need to push some
updates via active directory, i learn how to do this a few years back.
If you mean through a Group Policy, you create the "package definition"
in the "Software Settings" area of a GPO, in either the computer or user
depending on desired results, and LINK this GPO to the domain, OU,
or Site in which you wish to see the deployment.
Generally you would need an MSI (or MSP) file for each such software
update. (There are other choices but this is the main way.)
[SUS and the newer Windows Updates can also be used to deploy
updates to Windows components in place of using Microsoft Update
site from their web site but this is not the AD/GPO method.]
I have sense forgoten how. These updates would be pushed to many XP pro
machines a few 2000 pro machines no 98 or 95/nt machines.
It's supported for all Win2000+ and not for 9x anyway.
If i can help
with more information please let me know what you need to solve this
problem.
I have read on microsofts page about this, and as always the search
sent me into all different types of bad directions. I didn't just come
here first, i tried to research it.
I am not a believer in forcing you to read every manual first
as frequently we can point you to the key points much faster.
In those cases where someone just wants a particular registry
key or to understand a particular "event error message" they
really should make at least a brief attempt to Google it however.
