Yes, when Exchange is down. But when Exchange is running it can use the
Second servers GC. SBS servers frequently are taxed and offloading anything
permitted under the EULA is just good common sense.

We're not talking about more than one Domain. I never brought that up. You
did.


OP, just follow the documented methods listed. You need not re-invent the
wheel. ALL of this has been done successfully and documented adequately.

Anyway, after I see this post I went to see how I had that DHCP working.
And I confirmed that I have registry settings changed to make this work.

DCPromo does not install the DNS service. If it's not installed, it
doesn't matter if the DNS data is AD replicated or not.

What do you mean with this???
1- HE ALREADY HAS SBS2003 in network which means that he already has a DNS
server, to add a second server he only needs to install DNS service and
run dcpromo and the DNS AD integrated (by default on SBS or you'll have
event errors) will be replicated automatically, that's what I said.

As to making the 2nd and subsequent DC's Global Catlogs in a single
domain, Universal Group enuraration may, and should apply, as well as the
availability to the Exchange Server, and Infrastructure FSMO placement
with the SBS 2003 roles required to be on SBS.

1- For clarification about GC you should read the post in this ng called
"How many Global Catalog Servers are needed?" that I provided answer.
2- IM WHEN YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE DOMAIN. The Infrastructure master role:
Ensures cross-domain object references are handled properly, such as when
objects in one domain are referenced by objects in a different domain. If
you have only 1 Domain you don't have cross-domain object references, so
there isn't job for the IM.
3-If he only has 1 Exchange and that Exchange is on SBS, when he shutsdown
the SBS doesn't matter if a GC is available or not unless he has other
Apps that uses the GC. Of course that I also am in favor of making ALL DCs
GCs there's no reason not to make them GCs, read the post in this ng
called "How many Global Catalog Servers are needed?" that I provided
answer.

Actually I have this working in a SBS2003 SP1 and I didn't recall having
made any change, I now that in SBS2003 no SP when the DHCP service
detected another DHCP in the network then it stop to prevent duplicated
address. As far as I remember all I had to do (SBS2003 SP1) was to
authorize the other DHCP server and perform that configuration, but I
can't confirm this at this point.

As I already said, in DNS AD integrated it will replicate automatically
to the other server.

As to the GC, he can make the other server a GC, however GCs are only
needed when you have multiple domains in one forest, and SBS doesn't
support multiple domains, anyway you can always make the other a GC, no
problem with that.

SBS DHCP has a modification that checks for other DHCP servers on the
subnet and if found, the SBS DHCP server will refuse to start. Therefor
the normal 80/20 doesn't work for SBS2003 enviroments without
unsupported modifications.

Likely the logon fail was due to lacking DNS and a GC.

controller, what
happens with DHCP and DNS.

- If your clients are using DHCP you would want to have a DHCP
installed in the Second Server 80/20 DHCP configuration.
- It's Imperative to have DNS in a DC, make sure that is AD integrated
to avoid SBS errors.

I ran the wizard to create the 2nd DC and then shut down the primary.
Couldn't log in.
Then I noticed there was no DHCP or DNS on the 2nd DC, which might
explain
the "no login" issue.

Make sure that the the clients have the 2nd DC in their NIC DNS
properties as secondary DNS server.

So, I suspect I need to configure DHCP/DNS on this box but want to do
it in
a way that doesn't conflict with the primary.
Any ideas?

No conflits needed. Make sure that the DNS is AD integrated and it
will be automatically replicade to the 2nd server, as for the DHCP you
can make a DHCP 80/20 configuration, googleit.
