Re: RIS vs Altiris RapidDeploy/Install

In news:OYGA$DioGHA.2268@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
ComputerTeacher <computerteacher-nospam@xxxxxxxxxxxx> stated, which I
commented on below:
Please let me know if this isn't the best forum for this question.

My school is part of the school district's 2003 AD. We have two
domains in the forest, the admin (teachers and office staff) and the
student. Each school has a 2003 member file server for each domain. On
those servers we also run Altiris Deployment Server 6.5 (with the
latest hot fixes etc).
I'm tired of imaging because we have so much different hardware and
software needs for each lab and teacher computers. I want to create
the following setup:

-If a computer fails, the user (or teacher in the case of a student
lab) should be able to reboot the computer and press F8 (or F12 or
whatever) to boot to a PXE server. From there they should be able to
choose the unattended XP or 2000 install most appropriate for their
needs. The install needs to include all the appropriate software and
settings (i.e Office 2003, drafting program, identd client, registry
settings, etc).
So, I'd like to know if you would suggest Altiris RapidDeploy and
Install or implementing a RIS server? What are you're preferences?

And, as a side bar, if I should have a PXE server on each of the
domain controllers at the school or a separate machine. They're each
on different subnets. The admin side can talk to the student side,
but no the other way around.

Thank you,

Jeremy

For imaging, there are ways to get around the different hardware issues.
I've been using MSKB314082 in conjunction with Sysprep and Ghost for quite a
number of years to image student machines when I need to setup a classroom.
I've implemented this for my customer sites as well. I would just keep a
copy of the NIC, video and sound drivers on the root of the drive, and using
this method, it will boot on any IDE machines, including laptops.

I haven't used Altiris, but some colleagues tell me they like it, but some
have reservations on it as well. I couldn't tell you since I've never used
it.

You can also use the OEM method to have drivers install during the
mini-setup phase of Sysprep. You can also do it with RIPrep as well. Just a
little testing on your part to straighten it out and get all the drivers and
entries in the sysprep.inf file that you need setup and configured.
