Chris,
Actually the DN represents the object's Distinguished Name. The DN
represents the actual location of the object within the directory. The
"displayName" is an attribute of the object within the directory. The "CN"
represents the Common Name of the object in the directory.
A cool link that provides detailed information on LDAP and directory objects
is http://ldapman.org/articles/intro_to_ldap.html . Check it out, it's
pretty cool.
Regarding your problem here, you should be able to rename the "CN". First,
validate you have the correct permissions to modify the object within the
directory.

Chris

I have an account with the correct DN (Display Name) because I changed it
after the account had been setup. When I try to edit the CN attribute
using
ADSI Edit, I get the following error. "The attribute cannot be modified
because it is owned by the system." Is it possible to edit a CN?
Thanks,
Chris
