Re: lost all global catalogs

Jorge, I tried doing a DNS rebuild but it has failed miserably.

I have decided to scrap this forest and start again.

Thanks for all you good ideas.

Regards, Major.

- You can use replmon to replicate among all DCs.

Note:
to rebuild the DNS zone:
* Delete the forward zone and the reverse lookup zone

*go to the %systemroot%\system32\dns - delete any old zone that you may have
there.

*delete the files netlogon.dnb and netlogon.dns from
%systemroot%\system32\config

*create the forward lookup zone and the reverse lookup zone make them AD
integrated, for security purposes make sure that the zones only accept
secure only - updates.

*restart the netlogon service, confirm the creation of the files
netlogon.dnb and netlogon.dns on %systemroot%\system32\config

*run ipconfig /registerdns

*run netdiag /fix

Jorge, I have found that the DCs in the subdomains did not have SRV
records
in DNS in the _msdcs.rootdomain location. I have manually created the
records.
On the 2nd live system when I use Sites and Services to check the setup
there I can select to create a new connection to any of the servers in the
forest.
On this system I can only see the two DCs in the root an one DC in one
subdomain.
I was hoping that lack of SRV records in DNS would 'fix' this but it
hasn't.

Do you know how to get the DCs into the replication list so I create a
connection?

Regards, Major.

Jorge, GC has this Information event repeating.

NTDS Replication Global Catalog 1110
Promotion of this domain controller to a global catalog will be delayed
for
the following interval.

Interval (minutes):
30

This delay is necessary so that the required directory partitions can
be
prepared before the global catalog is advertised. In the registry, you
can
specify the number of seconds that the directory system agent will wait
before promoting the local domain controller to a global catalog. For
more
information about the Global Catalog Delay Advertisement registry
value,
see
the Resource Kit Distributed Systems Guide.

Prevous Error event was
NTDS General Global Catalog 1126
Active Directory was unable to establish a connection with the global
catalog.

Additional Data
Error value:
1355 The specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted.
Internal ID:
3200cd1

User Action:
Make sure a global catalog is available in the forest, and is reachable
from
this domain controller. You may use the nltest utility to diagnose
this
problem.

Jorge, there is a root DC selected as a GC but it is not functioning
it
is
waiting for subdomain partition copy which is being held up by
access
problems.

Jorge, as far as I know the latest version server 2003 is R2 and
that
is
based on SP1. I have not heard of either SP2 or SP3 being
available.
I have just checked on the web and could not find any reference
to
any
SP
other than SP 1.
Could you give me a hint as to where SP3 could be found.
Regards, Major.

Jorge, additional to note with 2nd DC results..
As I dont have a GC I cannot adjust any security using the
normal
GUI
methods.
Do you happen to know how I can resolve the access denied
issues
without a
GC?
Regards, Major.
