Extending Active Directory using Attributes and XML

Hello,
I would be very grateful for any help that can be given on the
following:
Basically I have an internal web application written in ASP.NET/C#.
One of the things I wish to do is store user profile settings
(passwords for outside systems, preferences, etc.). Due to the high
security policies due to the nature of our business the user
information (especially the passwords) must be stored in an
secure/encrypted/blah blah place and without spending a great deal of
money on 3rd party database plugins it makes a lot of sence to use
Active Directory.
The issue I have is that a growing application is always going to be
changing and adding custom attributes to AD can be quite resource
intesive (we have to go through rigourous change prodedures for such
things) so in order to give the most flexibility to the development I
am considering one element for the application which the just stores an
XML serialized version of the User profiles object (essentially a plain
XML doc).
Has anyone else used similar methods of storing XML in an Active
Directory? Are there any caveats to consider?
The next thing I wish to do (which I haven't yet grasped) is to create
a custom dialog in the Active Directory MSC. I really don't understand
this area. Is it better to just integrate into my web app (especially
considering the use of XML).
Thank you in advance for any help/advice given I am most grateful.
.
