You need to replace DC_Name with the dc you are running this on.

Run diagnostics against your Active Directory domain.
If you don't have the tools installed, install them from your server
install disk.
d:\support\tools\setup.exe
Run dcdiag and netdiag in verbose mode.
-> dcdiag /e /c /v /s:DC_Name /f:c:\dcdiag.log
Looks like this could be a problem but not sure how to fix it.
Domain Controller Diagnosis
Performing initial setup:
* Connecting to directory service on server DC_Name.
[DC_Name] LDAP search failed with error 58,
Win32 Error 58.
The host DC_Name could not be resolved to an
IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc
-> netdiag.exe /v > c:\netdiag.log
If you download a gui script I wrote it should be simple to set and run.
It also has the option to run individual tests without having to learn
all the switch options. The details will be output in notepad text files
that pop up automagically.
The script is located in the download section on my website at
http://www.pbbergs.com
Just select both dcdiag and netdiag make sure verbose is set. (Leave the
default settings for dcdiag as set when selected)
When complete search for fail, error and warning messages.

On this xp machine can you ping the dns server using either the ip
address or the name?
Yes
Can you ping the non-working xp machine from your dns server?
Yes
Is the network card settings the same on this machine as on other
working machines?
We only have a small network with 8 windows xp machines and none of
them work. They all log on fine but show the errors in event viewer
and dont update group policies.

When trying to logon with a windows XP machine which used to work
i now get the below two errors in event viewer.
It is a windows 2003 network running active directory and dns on
the same machine.
I can ping the machines host name and also connect to shared
folders on it. I can also ping quorumdev.local.
Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer
network. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not
be contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted.
No Domain Controller is available for domain QUORUMDEV due to the
following:
There are currently no logon servers available to service the
logon request. .
Make sure that the computer is connected to the network and try
again. If the problem persists, please contact your domain
administrator.
NSLookup on the client machine gives this error as does NSLookup
on the windows 2003 server which has DNS and active directory
running.
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.2.2: Non-existent
domain
Any ideas where i should be looking?
