Try running dcdiag and netdiag. If they aren't installed you will need to
install the support tools from the server 2000 cd's.
That will give you an idea if the servers are aware whos holding which role.
Check for any other errors as well.
I inherited a small domain. 35 or so users. 4 servers - a mixture of 2000
Server and 2003 server. On review, I discovered there was only 1 active
domain controller - though 2 others were listed in the AD. The active DC
was
running 2000 Server so I brought up a second DC running 2000 server.
Since then I have encountered numerous minor secuirty problems. File
permissions changed then reverted the next day. Groups in AD visible to
one
person using the MMC but not another. And now, when I try to make changes
from the 2nd DC it tells me it cannot locate a Global Catalog. (I
checked.
The 1st DC is checked as being a GC.)
I'm wondering if the "pre-existing" DC was not the true PDC for the
domain.
And if the functionality was ever transferred correctly. Except for the
one
I brought up, the DCs shown under Sites and Services are not listed as
computers/servers/domain controllers under Users and Computers.
Any ideas on what I can check or do? I'm far from an AD wizard. I
recognize there are some Master functions out there but I don't really
know
what they are or how to manipulate them.
