Re: Will a new DC help?

Is there a difference in logging onto the domain between the remote and
local machine? I'm going to guess no but I could be wrong. The number of
users that you have doesn't sound very significant, but I would place a
second dc in your domain for fault tolerance. If you lose your dc at your
main site no one will be able to authenticate until you restore the lost dc.
This is hoping that you are taking regular nightly backups.

We have two sites connected via a T1 line that is split for voice and
data. Each site has its own 3Com NBX, so VoIP is only site to site voice.
All servers (except a WSUS downstream replica) are in the one main site
(DCs, Citrix, SQL2000, Exchange 5.5, etc.).

The remote site has about 12 workstations and several laptop users. I
would estimate that we have non average about 8-10 users logged onto the
domain at any given time.

I'm considering using an older server we have to set up a DC for the
remote site (different subnet). It will not have to provide DHCP (that's
already handled by a 3Com router), just logons and DNS. All data and
programs will remain on the servers at the main site. the main reason for
it is to attempt to speed up logging on to the domain.

Based on the above, will a local DC speed things up for our users??
