We have a Windows 2003 SP1 DC with SFU 3.5 installed. The "server for NIS" is running and is working great for us. Now we would like to upgrade the domain controller to R2. Any one know what are the required procedures to upgrade the "server for NIS" from SFU3.5 to R2? Do we need to remove the SFU 3.5 including the "server for NIS" before any upgrade processes? Or we just need to upgraded to R2 directly (extended the schema by ADprep), then install the new R2's "server for NIS" on the top of the SFU3.5 's "server for NIS". Just wonder if there is a document from Microsoft that talks about upgrading the "server for NIS"? Thank You.

I have not seen any documentation or recommendations from Microsoft on upgrading from SFU 3.5 to the UNIX interoperability tools included in R2. I do know that SFU 3.5 and R2 use a different schema; R2 implements a partial RFC 2307 schema. Unfortunately, having already extended AD with SFU 3.5, you'll get both the "old" and "new" attributes included once you install R2.

I would guess that you can just install R2 (run ADPrep.exe from the 2nd CD first to extend the schema) and then install the updated Server for NIS component (if it isn't already installed).
