Re: The Directory Service is currently unavailable

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Travis Beazley <TravisBeazley@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> stated, which I
commented on below:
Hi There

I rencently upgraded the hardware on a Windows Server 2003 Standard
Domain Controller. I ran through the repair install just like
explained in the Microsoft KB article. Applied all updates and SP1 is
installed.

I am now getting a problem with adding printers on the workstations.
If I go through the add printer wizard and choose Find printer in the
directory, I get the following error after clicking Next:

The Directory Service is currently unavailable.

The DHCP and DNS seems to look ok, and assigning the domain
controller as the DNS server, and DNS seems to be working correctly
from the workstations.

I can add the printer by specifying the port (\\server\printer share)
and that works fine. It is just when a user goes to add a printer
from the "Find a printer in the directory" option. The same problem
happens when logged in as an Administrator.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Help is much appreciated.

Travis Beazley

Which tech article are you referring to?

If you've followed it, there shouldn't be any problems. Dumb question on my
part (trying not to assume here), did you by chance accidentally reinstall a
fresh copy on top of what you had instead of an 'upgrade'? That would cause
this issue.

Is the netlogon service running?
Can you get into ADUC? If so, are the original users and other objects
(computers, etc) still there?
What Event log errors are you getting?
Is it pingable by FQDN or IP?
