Lino767 <Lino767@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> stated, which I commented on
below:
I removed a server from a remote location network (Different
IP/Segment) without doing a DCPROMO and took it to corp office. Now
when I try to Dcpromo it I am getting A DOMAIN CONTROLLER COULD NOT
BE CONTACTED FOR THE DOMAIN XYZ.COM THAT CONTAINED AN ACCOUNT FOR
THIS COMPUTER. MAKE THE COMPUTER A MEMBER OF A WORKGROUP THEN REJOIN
THE DOMAINBEFORE RETRYING PROMOTION. "THE SPECIFIED DOMAIN EITHER
DOES NOT EXIST OR COULD NOT BE CONTACTED"
If I join the workgroup and join the domin again, is that going to
solve my problem? Please let me know your solution.
Thank you
Windows 2000/2003 is not like NT4 where we can just unplug and reformat a
server out of a domain. The AD database keeps track of all objects in a
domain/forest. TO manually remove this data, since you've already forced out
the machine, follow this article to do a Metadata Cleanup:
Delete extinct server metadata; Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (or
Enterprise):
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/standard/proddocs/en-us/sag_delservermetadata.asp
You will also need to delete it's reference in Sites and Services, and it's
computer account out of ADUC/domain controllers OU.
Now trying to promote it into a DC at a new location, the cardinal rule with
AD and DNS applies, make sure the DNS addresses listed in the machine's IP
properties are ONLY of the internal DNS servers that hosts the AD zone.
Otherwise, there is not way it can "find" the domain. This rule applies to
ALL machines that are part of an AD infrastructure. Do not use the ISP's in
any internal AD machine/client, etc. Use a forwarder for efficient internet
resolution.

Instead of the website you're using, I suggest to use OEx (Outlook Express
or any other newsreader), and configure a news account, pointing to
news.microsoft.com. This is a direct link to the Microsoft Public
Newsgroups. It is FREE and requires NO ISP's Usenet account. OEx allows you
to easily find, track threads, cross-post, sort by date, poster's name,
watched threads or subject.
