Thank you very much for your help. The package has been installed and we
are
up and running!

Glad to help.

What was the problem?

We like to know so we can track which methods work....

Hello!

I am trying to install Windows Defender on our PC's (Windows XP Pro
SP2)
using Active Directory Group Policy. I have created the installer
package,
given the appropriate users permisison to the package and policy. The
package has been successfully installed on my PC and the server.

On the other machines, during the start up process, they acknowledge
the
package and flash a message telling me it is being installed, but when
we
get
to the actual desktop, nothing has happened.

Startup process is COMPUTER "time" (logon is user based).

(It may seem a picky distinction but it really changes how the
permissions and rights work a LOT.)

If you have assigned this package to COMPUTERS (in the
GPO) it is the COMPUTER ACCOUNT that needs permissions
to the SHARE and the NTFS files on the server.

IF you are assigning it to a USER then perhaps the user must
be an ADMIN (Defender sounds like a service/driver level
program) and so it would likely fail for non-Admins.

Frequently we (must) assign such packages to the computers
so that the install will happen to EVERY computer (whether
anyone logs on or not) and so that it runs as the local system
to have sufficient rights.

If so, the computer itself must have permission to download
the files.

I cannot locate the program
anywhere on the C drive. When I reboot those machines, the same thing
happens (messages pop up telling me it is being installed, but nothing
happens).

Likely you have the PERMISSION (computer) or the RIGHTS
(user) issues above since you indicate you gave User permission
to the files.

Double check that too (user permission on files) if the other
items don't resolve this.

I am fairly new to this and have probably overlooked something simple.
Any
advice you have would be appreciated.

A lot of people get confused about the above.
