5. But was stunned to see that VPC was a lot faster. VMWare has a few
extra features, but not much.
I have been always a fan of Vmware workstation for my own testing purposes!
The feature in VMware I use most is "multiple snapshots". I believe VPC or
VS cannot do that. For me that is a HUGE feature!

I agree with the other posts. Virtual Server is now a very strong
competitor in the lower end of the virtualisation market, and for testing
scenarios. Particularly with Microsoft's Enterprise licensing (buy one
version of k3 ent and get four free VMs).
However, for your first test lab at home I would look at VMWare
Workstation
or Virtual PC. I was always a big fan of VMWare, using version 4, 4.5 and
5. But was stunned to see that VPC was a lot faster. VMWare has a few
extra features, but not much.
However, as the two server products are free, the workstation versions are
going to be used less and less. I've not used GSX (or server as its now
called) but have been doing a lot with Virtual Server. I've found it both
excellent and infuriating at times. The VSMT is also a pain. For simple
test networks and things it is great. For production it is great once you
know what you are doing. Although I believe the best form of management
in
a production environment is via scripts...
And to re-iterate KJs point. Memory, memory and then some. That is all
you
need. If you want a bunch of servers up and running get as much RAM as
you
can. I run four - seven servers (depending on OS) on my 1.5GB RAM Athlon
system.
