Re: File and Print Sharing benefits?

Hi,

I don't agree with the others. It's been awhile since I setup networks, but
I see no reason why you want to share anything on client computers. File and
Printer Sharing could be a security problem allowing others to remotely
access resources, especially if you are connected to the Internet.

If you disable File and Printer sharing I believe WINS won't work, but that
is not needed these days. The computers can still be remotely accessed and
administered with WMI.

The only time I have enabled File and Printer sharing on clients is when I
have a specific resource on the computer that needs to be shared, like an
SQL Server database, or a shared folder.

Am I off-base here?

You might want to turn it on. consider remote administration. You will not
be
able to map to your admin shares with out it on XP.

we gain any benefit from turning on File and Print Sharing?

That should be on by default on all NT-derived systems; I find quite
strange
that's disabled on your machines.

Are there any AD features we will lose by disabling this feature?

File and Print Sharing is not related to AD; it just allows a computer
to...
well... share files and printers :-)
