Sounds easy enough.....:-( YIKES !
Question regarding partitions: I have 600 Gb to work with. I am planning
on using 20 GB for the C: drive and then make the remaining my D: drive. Is
that ok or should I split the remaining between D: and E:?? My other W2K3
servers are all setup with only C: & D: drives.
You have 600 GB on *one disk*?!?
I'd rather think it's some kind of RAID.
If so, it's much better to divide disks rather than make only one big array and then partition it.
If, for example, you have 5 146 GB disks configured with RAID 5, it's a lot better to divide them into a two-disks RAID 1 array for the OS and a three-disks RAID 5 array for data; the point is to separate the physical disks for the OS and its pagefile from the physical disks used for data storage (databases, file shares and so on); this achieves a much better performance.
If you create one big array and partition it, you're doing I/O on all the disks for every disk operation, regardless of the partition involved, so you're degrading performance.
The best solution for data storage is one two-disks RAID 1 array for the OS (which should be as small as possible, using 18 or 36 GB disks if you can still find them) and as much storage for data as you need (which can be divided again in smaller arrays, f.e. if you're creating lots of file shares or if you're using a DBMS which stores data files apart from transaction logs, like SQL Server). The basic principle is: you should divide simultaneous I/O operations on different physical disks as much as you can.
