Depends on who(m) you ask, but pretty much no, empty root domains are not
normally recommended any longer. Keep in mind there are reasons you would
use one, but in your case it just adds overhead that you won't need/want
especially when it comes to recovery scenarios.

Hello, we are moving from WinNT to Win2003 AD (single domain) and I have a
question regarding dedicated root domains.
1. Is the dedicated root domain model still the Microsoft recommended way?
2. Can you create a dedicate root domain called mycompany.com, or should
you use a prefix with it?
