dedicated root domain issue

Hello, we are moving from WinNT to Win2003 AD (single domain) and I have a
question regarding dedicated root domains.

1. Is the dedicated root domain model still the Microsoft recommended way?

2. Can you create a dedicate root domain called mycompany.com, or should you
use a prefix with it?
