Thanks for the post, thoughts,and opinions, Paul. It's a mix I haven;t
completely come across before. The good thing is I've presented the client
decision makers with the major factors, and which ever way they decide to
pursue, they understand the value and importance of lab testing and fallback
planning.

Both are viable options. I would prefer the upgrade and rename, if you
have
the luxury of going to k3 functional straight away. Migrations are always
more complex with additional risk. I know the rename has a high element
of
risk, but it has been done by many people, and there are ways of
mitigating
risk with a successful DR plan.
However...the environment is small, so the migration can be done over one
(long) weekend if you have mailbox size restrictions. In this instance,
the
migration seems a better solution. If the environment was large, I would
go
with the rename. In your case, I'd choose migration.
There are obviously complications with the single-label domain name, but
you
know what you're doing well enough to not need to worry about rudimentary
name resolution problems.
Can't say I've ever been in your position, so cannot offer real life
advice.
If you've done this in the lab though, you're three quarters of the way
there...
