Re: Process to replace 2000 DC's with 2003.

Robert,

There should be no need to upgrade the WIN2000 Domain Controllers to WIN2003 first.

Here is what I might suggest:

1) run adprep /forestprep on the WIN2000 Domain Controller that holds the FSMO Role of Schema Master. You need to do this with an account that is a member of the Schema Admins security group.

2) run adprep /domainprep on the WIN2000 Domain Controller in each domain that holds the FSMO Role of Infrastructure Master. You need to do this with an account that is a member of the domain's Domain Admins security group.

You have now prepared your environment for WIN2003 Active Directory. You can now install WIN2003 on both of the new servers and run dcpromo on each of them (please, one at a time!).

You could then transfer all of the FSMO Roles from a WIN2000 Domain Controller to a WIN2003 Domain Controller. Make sure that you 'transfer' any and all 'services' that the WIN2000 Domain Controllers might be providing (like DNS, DHCP, GC etc.).

The only concern that you might have is if you run Exchange 2000 in the WIN2000 AD environment. Then you might run into the 'Mangled Attributes' problem. No problems there....there is a MSKB article that explains how to deal with this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314649).

Here is a link to a discussion about this that took place a long time ago!

Does this help?

I've got two DC running 2000 SP4 in mixed mode, I bought two new servers that I want to run 2003 SP1 and make them DC's to replace the two 2000's. Do I need to upgrade the two 2000 DC's to 2003 DC first, then create the two new 2003 DC's move the roles and then demote the old 2000/2003 machines. Or is there a way to bypass upgrading the 2000's to 2003 first.
