Re: dcpromo - demotion

Felix,

That all depends. How many domains are there in your environment? How many
Sites (as defined in the Active Directory Sites and Services)? If there are
multiple Sites in your environment is everything set to the default? How
many trees in the forest? Well, that one should not really matter. The
point is that you simply have to give it time. As you can see now, you rush
things during the initial install (because of time pressures) and you create
a bit mess for yourself.....But, please do not be offended. We have all
been there! ;-)

When you have a Domain Controller and you need to gracefully demote it one
of the really smart things to do is to make sure that in the TCP/IP
Configuration Settings it is N*O*T pointing to itself at all. You should
change that setting so that it is pointing to at least one other DNS Server
(read: Domain Controller, assuming DDNS). This will help with the DNS
'stuff' once it is dcpromo'd. Unfortunately this is not going to help you
this time.

Have you tried the /forceremoval switch?

I had built a server and made it a domain controller. During installation
the partition size was not correct for system drive compared to the other
servers I had built, so wanted to demote it and rebuild it. I demoted the
domain controller and made it a member server. Since, I had to get the
server rebuilt immediately, I tried rebuilding it, but had to use the same
name (without foreseeing that it would be still in the DNS entry etc..).
After I reinstalled the server, I did make it a domain controller. The
computer is confused because already a server with the same name exists.
which is obvious since, I could not wait for the time for replication and
other DNS changes to take place.

Now, I tried demoting it again, but could not and gave me errors. I know
you will ask me what is the error and I did not note it down. But, my
thought was can I use NTDSUTIL to successfully take the domain controller
from the domain and rebuild it. How long would it take for the old name to
go away or should I clean it up manually?

thanks in advance!
