RE: Domain Controller Hardware Failure, remove from AD

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Crikan,

Thanks for posting here. Also thanks for our MVP Lanwench's kind
suggestion.

Crikan, from your post, my understanding of this issue is: you would like
to know how to remove a crashed and decommissioned domain controller from
the Active Directory. If this is not correct, please feel free to let me
know.

Usually, we use the Active Directory Installation Wizard (Dcpromo.exe) for
demoting a domain controller to a member server. As part of the demotion
process, the wizard removes the configuration data for the domain
controller from Active Directory. This data takes the form of an NTDS
Settings object that exists as a child of the server object in Active
Directory Sites and Services.

In the event that the NTDS Settings object is not removed correctly or the
Active Directory Installation Wizard is unable to run, the administrator
can use the Ntdsutil.exe utility to manually remove the NTDS Settings
object. For more information about the detailed procedure for removing the
NTDS Settings object in Active Directory for a particular domain
controller, you may refer to the following Microsoft Web site:

controller demotion
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498

Note: if the removed DC was a Flexible Single Master Operation (FSMO) role
holder, relocate those roles to a live DC. For more information, please
see:

255690 HOW TO: View and Transfer FSMO Roles in the Graphical User Interface

Hope this helps.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,
Tom Che
