The pre-Windows 2000 name is the legacy name, or NetBIOS name as it would
appear to older NT 4.0 and below clients. While they can be different, it
is best practice to make this the same as the "Computer name" to prevent
confusion.
To find your computer in the Directory, use the Find tool. There's an icon
for it on the ADUC toolbar. Make sure you put the focus on 'Computers' in
the initial search dialog box as the default is "Users, Contacts, and
Groups". It has to be in there somewhere.

I have a member server in my Active Directory domain that is a database
server with 1 network file share. When I dragged and dropped it from the
default "Computers" container to my new "Servers" container, it disappeared.
Now when I try to re-create it in the Directory, I get the error message
"Windows cannot create the new computer object because the pre-Windows 2000
computer name is already in use. Select another name, and then try again."
What's up with that? Also, what exactly is the pre-Windows 2000 name for?
Would I be OK if I give it a meaningless pre-Windows 2000 name? Any help
that you give me is greatly appreciated.
