Replication protocol (IP or SMTP)

Hi,
Below is an excerpt from Windows Resource Kit --
The SMTP transport can be used to send intersite replication data by means
of e-mail messages when a direct Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) connection is not possible between a site and the rest of
the network.
So what does "direct Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) connection is not possible" mean? Does this mean that in a network
which has implemented token ring or IPX/SPX, then you could use SMTP for AD
replication?
Any suggestions are appreciated
