You might be able to change the DNS zone to a FQDN instead of a single-label
and implement what is commonly referred to as a disjoint namespace and then
make the change to forest functional level and rename.

You still need to do what Paul has suggested though, as there may well be
other problems that DCDIAG will unearth.
