displayName isn't mandatory, therefore it doesn't have to have a value.
When you create a computer object you should fill in the displayName
attribute if you want to use it for something. Obviously, the process for
adding a computer object to the domain populates the displayName attribute
with the CN. A computer object's CN is always the hostname plus a $ on the
end.
