It appears to me that when you are either creating a new domain structure -

to become quite expert in the use of dcdiag, ntdsutil, and other AD tools to
investigate, clean, and rebuild the Active Directory. I'm pretty depressed
by just how defective AD appears to be after a "clean" run of dcpromo.
Are there good books specifically dedicated to the topic of how to repair a
broken AD, and how to recover from various defect scenarios?

I don't know about such book but I think that good understanding of the mechanism which are beneath the AD and tools will let You improve Your ability to troubleshoot and operate AD. ANd for this I know very good book "Inside Active Directory 2'nd Edition" - You can find it on Amazon.com
