Re: dcpromo fails on 2nd server after in-place upgrade of NT to W2

We found our culprit. Prior to upgrading the NT4 PDC, we added a registry
entry

(HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters entry called
NT4Emulator of type DWORD = 1.)

We did this to prevent our XP and W2K Professional clients from
authenticating only with the new W2K3 DC. We live in a WAN enviornment so
client authentication over slow links was not something we wanted to see.
The above registry entry worked as promised. Unfortunately, it also caused
the other W2K3 server (the one we wanted to promote) to believe it was only a
member of the "old" domain--it found the "new"domain without any problems but
did not recognize its membership with the upgraded domain.

The computer we wanted to Dcpromo was also running WINS. We called
Microsoft to help us with the problem. The tech suspected we would not have
run into this problem if the server to be promoted had not been running
WINS. It was the combination of the PDCemulator registry key and the
promotable computer running WINS that was our downfall.

We removed the registry entry from the upgraded PDC and successfully
dcpromo'ed the second domain controller. Then we added the key back.

Thanks for all your help!
