Hi Richard,
I would like to confirm that does the client use roaming profile? If they
use local profile, win2k server will not affect the client desktop. From
your description, it seems the client still want to find the win2k serve
instead of win2k3 server. I agree with Paul that checking DNS will be a
good idea. _msdcs is the critical domain, the client will want to contact
DNS server to find _msdcs to locate the DC when the client logon to the
domain. Therefore, please check if _msdcs contains record point to win2k3
server. On one XP client, please issue the following command
Nslookup
DomainName
Here, DomainName is the your domain name. The command should return all DCs
in the domain, you then use the following command:
Type=srv
DomainName
Do you see win2k3 server is listed?
In addition, you can refer to the following steps to rebuild _msdcs
subdomain on win2k3 DNS server:
1. Right-click Forward Lookup Zones in DNS and select New Zone.
2. Specify Primary Zone, and use _msdcs.domain.local as the Zone name.
3. Stop Netlogon and DNS service.
4. Rename %windir%\system32\config\netlogon.dns and netlogon.dnb
5. Start Netlogon and DNS service
6. ipconfig/flushdns and ipconfig/registerdns, it is on the client to issue
the command instead of the server.
7. Close and reopen the DNS snapin.
8. Verify _msdcs.domain.local contains dc, domains, gc, and pdc.
Please restart one client and logon to the domain, does this issue present?
If so, please refer to the following article to gather the MSPreport on the
win2k3 server, please download MPSRPT_DirSvc.EXE on for the DC:

please send the MPSreport to v-rebc@xxxxxxxxxxxxx for research.
Any update, let's get in touch!
